what is search engine optimization

What is search engine optimization (SEO)? Search engine optimization is a process of preparing your website so that it is optimally tuned to be found and indexed by search engines. Sounds simple right? Well, it's not really. Being found and indexed by search engines is not all that hard. However, if you take a look at the popular search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and MSNLive, they have billions of web pages in their databases. Yes, billions. So the task here is not only to be found and indexed by the search engines, but to be associated with the appropriate themes - or keywords - so that end users searching in these engines find your site.

If you are a beginner at search engine optimization, that last paragraph is a little thick. If you are more advanced, you may want to skip down. For the beginner SEO, let's break that last paragraph down. Each search engine crawls the entire Internet on a regular basis to make sure they know every web site. They do this because they all want to be the complete directory, or index, of the Internet. Once they know about a web site (often referred to as "being indexed", or "in the index") the search engine next attempts to determine what the web site is about. Essentially, the search engine wants to establish the theme of your site based on the content that is observed. This process is entirely automated, so the theme has to be abstracted based on the content on your site. Put another way, the words on your site are used by the search engine spiders to develop an idea of what your site is about.

End-users going to Google, Yahoo or MSNLive, don't ask the search engine for answers based on themes. End user searchers, are looking for specific information. As such, they enter keyword terms for their searches. Keywords are simply the terms that an end user puts into a search engine when looking for specific information.

The the task of the search engine is to match the keywords entered by the end-user with the themes for each web site and bring the user to the most helpful information on the Internet. This is where search engine optimization comes in. If you organize your web site around the keywords that you anticipate end users are likely to be looking for, you've made the job of the search engine much easier. If you do this, the search engines are more quickly and efficiently able to tell what your web site is about and how to match it to keywords that end users are searching on.

Put in it's simplest terms, this process of helping the search engines match your site to keywords is what search engine optimization is all about. If you make the job of the search engine easier, you will facilitate a match between the keywords searched by the end-user and your site. This means that more people find your site - often called "getting more traffic."

SEO Step by Step

Have you ever checked a gazillion times to see if your site is even listed in Google? Yes, I remember the days where I would do that very same thing. I would be at work checking to see if I was listed in Google. I would probably do this every hour or so because the thought of having a website that generates profits on autopilot simply amazed me.
Well after a week I gave up!
I would check to see if I was listed by searching Google with the following syntax. Site: mydomain.com. That way I'll know if anything is coming up for site. So I went back to the drawing board and started doing a few different methods so my site would get indexed in the search engines.
So I finally got indexed and I did it for another site to make sure it wasn't a fluke! This is what I did. I simply found sites that create pages for the purpose of serving up information about your site. (Sounds confusing I know) For example, sites that show traffic stats of other sites. Simply search Google for visitor stats sites. You would then visit the site and then search your URL. This gives your site a backlink and a page on their site to be crawled by the search engines.
Find 8 other similar sites and repeat the process until you are indexed. Keep in mind that this is only the basics. Once you get indexed you still have to do engage in your SEO activities.

Inclusion in Google's search results is free and easy; you don't even need to submit your site to Google. Google is a fully automated search engine that uses software known as "spiders" to crawl the web on a regular basis and find sites to add to our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed in our results aren't manually submitted for inclusion, but found and added automatically when our spiders crawl the web.

To ask Google to crawl a URL on a site you don't own, visit http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submiturl/. However, if you own the site, we recommend that you follow the process below.

If you've just added a URL to your site, or a page has significantly changed since the last time it was crawled, you can ask Google to crawl it. (Google doesn't guarantee that we'll index every URL we crawl, however.)

1. On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want.
2. On the Dashboard, under Diagnostics, click Fetch as Googlebot.
3. In the text box, type the path to the page you want to check.
4. In the dropdown list, select Web. (You can select another type of page, but currently we only accept submissions for our Web Search index.)
5. Click Fetch. Google will fetch the URL you requested. It may take up to 10 or 15 minutes for Fetch status to be updated.
6. Once you see a Fetch status of "Successful", click Submit to Index, and then click one of the following:
* To submit the individual URL to Google's index, select URL and click Submit. You can submit up to 50 URLs a week in this way.
* To submit the URL and all pages linked from it, click URL and all linked pages. You can submit up to 10 of these requests a month.
